Widespread soil bacterium that oxidizes atmospheric methane

Beitrag von Manfred »

"Tveit, A.T. et al. 2019 Widespread soil bacterium that oxidizes atmospheric methane --- The methane oxidizing bacteria in this study is a different specific widely distributed form of methanotroph (Methylocapsa gorgona MG08) that can grow on ambient air utilizing not only methane but also CO2 as a carbon source as well as CO & H2 as energy sources. So this is a form of bacteria that is much more effective at oxidizing atmospheric methane and other trace gases."

Das hier? Methylocapsa gorgona

Die Effizienz bereit bei mehr als 1,86ppm CH4 wachsen zu können ist schon beeindruckend:
" These experiments unequivocally demonstrated that M. gorgona MG08 grew in ambient air (∼1.86 p.p.m.v. CH4, ∼0.2 p.p.m.v. CO, and ∼0.5 p.p.m.v. H2) and higher (20 and 1,000 p.p.m.v.) CH4 concentrations (Fig. 5). After up to 3 wk of incubation the largest colonies were observed under 1,000 p.p.m.v. CH4 while smaller colonies formed under 20 p.p.m.v., similar to those in unamended atmospheric air, confirming that increased concentrations of CH4 stimulated growth."

nettes Zitat aus letzterem Artikel:
"“Anthropogenic activity — agriculture, tillage, all kinds of things seem to destroy it — so certainly understanding the exact organisms that perform the process could be worthwhile in understanding how not to destroy them,” says Dunfield."
